Founding Physicians
In 1965, Dr. S. Fleetwood Maddox, Jr. joined Dr. Braswell Collins in practice at 740 Hemlock Street. Four years later, Dr. John Page joined them at a new office at 800 1st Street. In 1974, Dr. L.E. Brown joined Dr. Maddox and Dr. Page, and Dr. Collins retired. The practice, then known as Central Georgia Eye Center, moved to the current location on Oglethorpe Street in 1985.
Braswell E. Collins, MD (1908-2004)
Dr. Collins was a native of Baxley, GA and moved to Macon in 1953.
He was a graduate of Mercer University and the School of Medicine of the Medical College of Georgia. His residences in ophthalmology were served at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, St. Louis, and at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
He was an active member of the Georgia Surgical Society, the Southern, and the American Medical Associations. Dr. Collins served as a past president of the Bibb County Medical Society and past vice president and director of the Medical Association of Georgia. He received a Fifty-Year Service Emblem from the Medical Association of Georgia and a Distinguished Service Award from the Bibb County Medical Society.
Dr. Collins was co-founder and president of the Georgia Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Society, which is now the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, and he was the first member of the medical group that is known today as the Eye Center of Central Georgia.
Dr. Collins was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Macon, and past president and teacher of the Harris Bible Class. He was a Director of the Macon Rescue Mission, former trustee of the Medical Foundation of the Medical Center of Central Georgia, member of Gideons International and a member of the Golden K Kiwanis International. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel, Flight Surgeon, US 8th Air Force, World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a former member of the US Power Squadron and US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
S. Fleetwood Maddox, Jr., MD (1935-2015)
Dr. Maddox practiced for over 35 years at the Eye Center, specializing in pediatric ophthalmology.
Dr. Maddox was born in Macon and graduated from Mercer University with his undergraduate degree. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. His internship and residency were completed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA, where he served as Staff Ophthalmologist from 1961 to 1962.
Dr. Maddox was the Ophthalmologist Advisor to the Knight's Templar Eye Foundation, Inc. In 1997, Dr. Fleetwood Maddox was awarded both the American Academy of Ophthalmology Humanitarian Award as well as the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology L.E. Brown Humanitarian Award.
Dr. Maddox has participated in medical mission work by providing diagnostic and surgical ophthalmic care to needy patients living in the St. Ann's Bay area of Jamaica. "I'm happy to be able to help in this program," said Dr. Maddox. "As a physician, I believe that it's important to extend our knowledge and abilities to those who are not so lucky."
John A. Page, MD
Dr. Page, a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist, has practiced general ophthalmology at the Eye Center of Central Georgia, where he started his practice in 1969.
He graduated from Mercer University in 1960 and the Medical College of Georgia in 1963. He completed his Internship in the Air Force at the Wilford Hall Hospital in San Antonio, Texas and the School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. During the Vietnam War, he served as a flight surgeon at McConnell AFB in Kansas, Yokoto AFB in Japan and Takhli AFB in Thailand.
After military service, he completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Medical College of Virginia with special emphasis in anterior segment eye surgery and eye trauma surgery. He served on the teaching staff at Emory in the 70's and early 80's and more recently as a clinical assistant professor in the department of Surgery at Mercer Medical School.
Luther E. Brown, MD (1938-1988)
Dr. Brown was a Board-Certified ophthalmologist specializing in cataract and lens implant surgery, laser surgery, corneal refractive surgery, and glaucoma.
Dr. Brown was a native of Macon, and a graduate of Mercer University and the Medical College of Georgia. Following his ophthalmology residency at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington D.C, he obtained the rank of lieutenant colonel and served as chief of the ophthalmology service, Second General Hospital, Landstuhl, West Germany, and flight surgeon for the 63rd Aviation Medical Detachment.
He was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Medical Association of Georgia, and served as president of the Bibb County Medical Society, president of the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, and chief of staff of the Medical Center of Central Georgia.
